Mrs. Franco’s Walker

Mrs. Franco is a new patient on Edda’s floor. She recently had hip surgery and is staying at the care center to receive physical therapy and rehabilitation services. One of the things that Mrs. Franco needs to learn how to do is use a walker. Mrs. Franco first used the walker at her last therapy session, but she still needs help.

Edda was ready to help Mrs. Franco use her walker to go to the dining room for lunch. First, Edda made sure the walker was in front of Mrs. Franco and not to the side. If the walker was to the side, Mrs. Franco could lose her balance. Edda watches to see that Mrs. Franco puts both hands on the grips before she stands up. Once Mrs. Franco is steady, she doesn’t seem to know what to do next. Then Edda tells her to move the walker on its wheels about six inches forward. Then Mrs. Franco should step into her walker at the new location.

Working together, Mrs. Franco and Edda complete the journey to the dining room without any problems.
