In morning report, Marta receives updates and instructions about the residents who will be in her care that day. Today, she learns that she will be assigned to the east wing on the second floor and responsible for the care of six patients. Of those six patients, Mrs. Rose and Mrs. Germain need complete assistance with grooming and toileting. Mr. Bedford has to be in physical therapy at 9:00am and Mr. Franklin at 10:30am. Mrs. Sims and Mr. Lefkowitz are new residents who were admitted last night and will need help learning the locations of everything and the routine of the care center.
Marta starts her day helping Mrs. Rose and then Mrs. Germain with grooming and toileting. By the time Marta is finished, it is 8:00am and time for breakfast for ambulatory patients. She goes to Mrs. Sims’s room and brings her to Mr. Lefkowitz’s room to go down to the dining room. On her way back, Marta notices that Mr. Franklin is still in his room. When she walks in, he is holding a picture of his wife and quietly crying. She asks him what is wrong, and he tells her today would have been their 60th wedding anniversary. Marta sits down with Mr. Franklin and asks him to tell her about his wife.
When Marta finally leaves Mr. Franklin, she realizes that it is after nine. As she rushes to Mr. Bedford to bring him to physical therapy, she knows that she needed to spend the time with Mr. Franklin, but she also needed to be bring Mr. Bedford to his appointment. Managing the needs of the residents in a timely manner is always difficult.
